What Are Dental Implants

People are living longer than ever these days.  Good oral hygiene habits allow many of us to maintain our natural smiles for a lifetime.  Although, sometimes our teeth just can’t keep up. Dental implants can repair your smile and your oral health if you’ve lost teeth due to an injury or disease.

A dental implant uses a post to seat the tooth in the gums and, or, jaw bone.  The post is made of titanium (we use Hiossen products for posts and implants). This is the same material that’s utilized in other surgeries where metal is coming into contact with bone.  Once the post is seated and the space has healed (see “Healing Time” below), the replacement tooth will be placed on the post.

This replacement tooth can be removed and replaced in the future if needed.  The post will stay totally intact and stationary as the gums have healed around it.

Implants may require a bone or gum graft if a patient’s jaw bone or gum health has been affected by poor oral hygiene.

Healing Time

The implant must be allowed about 3-6 months to heal, and during this time the jaw bone will form around the implant post in a process called osseointegration. During this healing time you can have temporary crowns installed so that you can eat and speak normally and maintain a proper aesthetic.  This also serves as a test trial to refine the most comfortable and functional bite orientation.
