All toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss are pretty much the same, right?  Wrong; getting the right toothpaste, toothbrush, and floss is as important and customizable as a pair of prescription glasses or orthotic shoe soles.  Having the right dental care products at home sustains proper oral health between routine maintenance visits. Also, it ensures that conditions and at-risk scenarios are not worsened due to improper technique and application.

Toothpaste: Cavity Control, Sensitivity, Gum Health, or Whitening?

There’s about as many varieties and brands of toothpaste as there are shampoo, and they’re similar in the way they serve different needs.  You have seen it yourself, whitening paste, cavity paste, sensitivity paste, and periodontal paste galore! Surely cavity protection is the right toothpaste for everyone who “actually cares about their dental health”, right? Wrong again.

There are different risks to oral health depending on the person. If someone is at high risk for periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease, they should be using periodontal toothpaste oppose to cavity protection to promote gum health and restoration.  If a person is experiencing extreme sensitivity then they should avoid whitening toothpastes that can further discomfort. It is best to consult your dental professional’s opinion on the toothpaste that is right for you.

Toothbrushes: Electric or Analog?

Now you surely have noticed the pattern of variety in dental care products, so let’s take this lesson to the range of toothbrushes out there.  The first decision you make when choosing a toothbrush is most likely, “do I get an electric toothbrush or do I stick the old trusty ‘analog’ brush?”  The simple answer is that electric toothbrushes are typically much more effective at cleaning along the gum line. The varying motions of the bristles allow for a more effective removal of bacteria.  Some brushes even boast technologies that track your brushing routines through Bluetooth connection to your phone.

Also, firm bristles are commonly thought to remove more plaque, but in fact they end up doing more harm than good.  The hard bristles can increase worn dentition and remove enamel that’s critical to tooth health. It’s best to reach for toothbrushes with soft bristles when shopping at the pharmacy or grocery store.

Floss Like a Boss

Floss is floss, plain and simple, right? Of course not, just as the rest of the preventative products there’s different styles available depending on your needs.   Flossing can be difficult for people who have had fillings, crowns, and caps put on their teeth.  Seams and gaps can tear the floss or the floss can become stuck under a crown.  Floss tape, a wider, more robust version of floss, is ideal for people experiencing these flossing troubles. Utilizing floss tape can greatly improve your flossing results and provide more bacteria and plaque removal from gum lines and in between teeth.  It’s a good rule of thumb to have traditional floss and floss tape in your oral health ensemble.

Before shopping for any of these products you should consult your dentist or hygienist to find out which ensemble of products best fits your needs.  This blog is in no a way a prescription of treatments for health issues, and you should always speak with a professional before changing your oral health routine.  The content on this blog is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
