Tooth Loss

There are many reasons why a person might lose a tooth.  Tooth decay and infection can make it necessary for the tooth to be extracted.  Also, a strong impact or chewing motion can cause a tooth to fall out. When a tooth is lost the remaining teeth can shift and create more potential risks to a person’s oral health.  The most severe condition from not treating a missing tooth is bone loss in the jaw.

Dental Bridges

A dental bridge is used as a fixed prosthetic to fill in a gap where someone is missing a tooth.  Literally, it bridges the gap in your mouth from one of your teeth to the next. Typically bridges are used to fill in the gap of one tooth, but sometimes they can be utilized for larger gaps.  Bridges need a crown on each side where it’s being anchored. These two teeth are known as abutment teeth. This term comes from the literal definition of abutment, “a structure built to support the lateral pressure of an arch or span, e.g. at the ends of a bridge,” and the use of “abutment” is used for talking about actual bridges’ supports.  The false tooth that’s filling in the gap between the abutments is known as the pontic.

Dental Implant

A dental implant is used in the same situations as a bridge.  Implants are more appealing to a lot of folks because they don’t have to be fixed to other teeth, and they add more support than a bridge.  A dental implant requires an anchor to be placed in the gums where the natural tooth used to be or should be. After the gums have healed from the placement of the anchor, the crown will be screwed onto the anchor.  The crowns can be replaced indefinitely if they’re chipped or broken. The implants act like a normal tooth with the anchor acting as the root of the tooth. While implants can cost more money than bridges, they are easier to clean, stronger, and more durable.
